Organizational Behavior Session 1
The first session started with an overview of the course and an explanation of the individual and the group assignments. The professor also explained the difference between FinTechs and TechFins. And the difference is not that the word is backwards but that techfin is a financial services that is provided by large technological companies. We can see through the pandemic that things change very rapidly and if organizations do not adapt accordingly, they would lose a competitive edge and would incur difficulties. After much discussion regarding the course contents, we moved on to our case studies. My group (Chanakan, Milana, and Me) worked on the fall of the Kodak empire and how its missed opportunities. Even though it was such a successful company, it could not survive and even filed for bankruptcy because of the disruptive technology present. The lesson we can learn from this is to be mindful of discruptive technologies and try to see it in another light. See the disruptive technology as an opportunity to grow in the market and expand goods and services. Because even though they had the means to invest into the technology of digital cameras, the intention and motivation was not in the right place as they were stuck in their ways and could not see a future without film.Granted, it is difficult for companies to make ogranizational change as seen in car companies and new companies coming in with technological advancements, such as Tesla. On the other hand was the case study of Starbucks where they have successfully disrupt their own business model of decades to rebuild a new business model to thrive in the future. Starbucks made step-by-step advancements into a customer-centric, tech-enabled powerhouse and partnered up with Apple Music, Netflix, etc. to sell the customers a Stabucks experience that is supposedly superior to other coffee shops. They are also committed to selling ethically-sourced coffee and invests in their associats through college plans, retirememt and healthcare benefits as well.
