Cross-Cultural Training Session 1

In the first session, we talked about the course introduction and went over briefly over understanding the role of culture and what cultural dimensions and theories we will be talking about throughout this course. We also established that national culture also has an influence on corporate culture. We also talked about culture and reverse culture shock and the difference between engaging in international relations and businesses adapting to cultural differences and challenges. We also learned that the reason why countries/companies go to places with different cultures, language and geography is because the administration is similar due to their corporate and civil laws—mostly from previous colonies.

After the break, we discuss what we could change if we were to move elsewhere. How certain factors such as attitudes and behavior could be more adaptable than changing culture, values, beliefs and expectations is more difficult and subjected to longer change. Personality is something that is personal and unique to one, while a national culture is something you share with everyone else from your coutry of origin.

We were also introduced to the Iceberg Theory where the visible part or the tip of the iceberg is body language, clothing, lifestyle, drinking and eating habits. The values and social morals include family values, sex roles, and friendship patterns. The deepest part is called the basic cultural assumptions such as national identity, ethnic cultures and religion. Then, we learned about the different layers of culture ranging from national culture to business/industry culture, to company culture (organizational culture) and individual behavior/decision-maker (driven by the previous factors but up to the individual). National culture is programmed to you from a very young age and company culture comes later in life with changes adaptable depending on where. There are ways in which culture influences an organization and that includes national variables, socio-cultural variables, cultural, attitudes and individual and group behavior.
